A notorious firesale of parts was held out of New Jersey. “It offers the bassist all the innovative features Kramer is known for at a modest price…” Finishes were listed as maple, walnut, or black, and gone were references to wood “stripes,” though the 4001 seen here does have inlaid walnut striping. And while Kramer Guitars followed in the footsteps of builder Travis Bean, who used machined aluminum to make guitar necks starting in ’74, Kramer’s bolt-on necks felt more like a traditional instrument consisting of an aluminum bar with wood inserts on each side, Kramer’s approach reduced the much-maligned weight of Bean’s neck-through instruments and provided a more-natural (wood) feel. Solid bass over all, plays great and electronics work as expected. Kramer stopped making the aluminum neck versions of these bases in 1980, so it's at the latest a 1980 but may be from the 70's era. Kramer's exclusive use of the Floyd Rose® tremolo, Schaller tuning keys, and Seymour Duncan® pickups held it to a higher standard, above and beyond other makers in the 1980s. After enjoying great success in the decade – including status as the best-selling brand of ’85 and ’86 – in the ensuing years, the company encountered financial issues, and the brand was ultimately acquired by Gibson.
He tried one last time to produce Kramer guitars from surplus parts in the Neptune plant, but only a few hundred were made. With early attempts from Wandre and Ovation, the movement really resonates with classic models from Travis Bean and Kramer. Gary Kramer, Dennis Berardi, Peter LaPlaca (a Vice President at Norlin, parent company of Gibson in 1974), and investor Henry Vaccaro joined forces to open a plant in Neptune, New Jersey.
